How did you use your privilege today? How are you planning to leverage it tomorrow? It's a cold hard rain pummeling us; maybe think about sharing your umbrella with someone who doesn't have one.

The Cognitive Load of It All, or the Response Matrix [US/pols, prepping, Ω] by @siderea
"As our country slides into catastrophe, part of what a lot of people are struggling with is the sheer overwhelm of all there is to deal with cognitively, so it might be helpful to have a high-level overview, on a meta-level, of what all there is, just to help grapple with it all. This is not a map, this is like the coordinate system that gets overlaid on an old-school paper map"
Good health is a temporary privilege. Some people get to enjoy it for most of their lives. Others for a shorter time, or not at all. If you're healthy now, and it's *possible for you to mask up to protect others, but you don't, you're either an asshole, or a short-sighted fool.
Even if there *weren't* another pandemic starting, if you live long enough, your health will deteriorate so you'll need others to protect you. If you don't help normalize that behavior today, why do you expect other people will take care of you when you need it?
*Acquiring masks won't keep you from eating or paying rent.

Hear me out, #Mastodon. It's past time to #normalize #jurynullification for plaintiffs that that have destroyed the #environment and #socialcontract.
I note from the US, to China, to the Global South, we're all raging at the breakdown of the Social Contract, as the Rich in every country have decided the correct response to Climate Change is Feudalism.
It is morally right to ice a Healthcare Insurance CEO because of the breakdown of the Social Contract. This is the world they wanted after all....
@HeavenlyPossum
There is also the #SocialContract though. You don't have to agree with it, I guess, but I don't think it's fair to ignore it when talking about the #ruleoflaw
Here's my take on it.
The people give control, including the making of laws, to nominated individuals /an identified group whose job it is to then protect the people (as best they can).
I grieve the current assault on the #RuleOfLaw just as I grieve the evident collapse of the Social Contract. The powerful are not protecting the people. And the people are justifiably pissed off.
Revolt and repression are the likely outcome when either party in the Social Contract disregards their responsibilities under it.
A quotation from Johnson, Lyndon:
«
The war on poverty is not a struggle simply to support people, to make them dependent on the generosity of others. It is a struggle to give people a chance. It is an effort to allow them to develop and use their capacities, as we have been allowed to develop and use ours, so that they can share…

Richardson concludes,
"In the past in the U.S., when the media has appeared to become captive to established interests, new media have begun to give a voice to the opposition."
Note how the phrase "captive to established interests" is a huge indictment of the corporate media in this critically important election cycle, and an explanation of why those media have abandoned any pretense of defending democracy.

“'Indeed, every paper ran more front-page stories that mentioned Clinton’s server [than] they did total stories that referenced Trump’s indictment.' 'The former president continues to benefit from news outlets grading him on a massive curve,' Gertz wrote, 'resulting in relatively muted coverage for his nakedly authoritarian, unfathomably racist, and allegedly criminal behavior.'”

Richardson finds this endorsement an echo of the Atlantic's 1860 warning that the presidential election “is a turning-point in our history.” As she also notes, both endorsements in 1860 and now show a new press challenging an older system.
She writes,
"In Public Notice today, Noah Berlatsky listed the many articles claiming that Harris is avoiding the press…."

Heather Cox Richardson looks at the Atlantic's endorsement of Kamala Harris, only the fifth time it has made such an endorsement since its founding in 1857 and third time it has endorsed Trump's opponent. The journal says that Trump is “one of the most personally malignant and politically dangerous candidates in American history.”

"Most of political journalism fails to meet the moment because it has chosen to maintain – or is unable to break free of – the illusion that the 2024 campaign is another in the long line of great quadrennial public debates engaged in mostly good faith by two sides seeking to coalesce the will of the people around their preferred vision for the country."

"It is a mark of the poor health of our democracy that democracy itself is on the ballot at all. A choice between democracy or not democracy isn’t a choice but an existential threat that doesn’t sustain or nourish civic life."

"The country is poised at a great fork in the road, with a historically significant decision to be made between democracy or authoritarianism, pluralism or cultism, the rule of law or Trumpian retribution. Yet the national political conversation, the news coverage of it, the pace of daily events doesn’t seem to be rising to the momentousness of the occasion."
